Weekend Debrief: Is Mark Ronson a Wedding DJ?
Staff Writer, Joyce Seok, went to Signal last week to see legendary producer Mark Ronson spin on vinyl. Here are her thoughts:
Signal is a wonderful club: an intimate stage, stadium stairs in the margins for the vertically challenged, and a wooden patio with the perfect level of noise bleed to enjoy the tunes while having a conversation with friends not at yelling volume. And you always have to respect a stickers-over-phone-cameras policy.
I came with a friend last Wednesday to see Mark Ronson spinning on vinyl, intrigued by what he’d pull from his repertoire and the crate digging reps he’d described in his memoir. After some happenstance run-ins on the patio, I was blown away by his opener Cosmo: a perfect blend of neu disco, atmospheric house, and some mainstream hits sprinkled in (still reminiscing about a particularly good mix into “Sexyback” vocals).
Mark came on after a few hours, sliding through the crowd to walk on stage (he touched me!); tears welled up as he opened with the Dreamgirls “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Then — a loop into a cloud rap song? Then Ludacris’s “Move Bitch”? Then … “Gasolina”? On vinyl?
I felt like I was being punked. And I couldn’t tell if the crowd was in on it. Whether they were just as shocked as me, or playing into his star power, I was none the wiser.
My friend and I left after 45 minutes of willpower, as “Hips Don’t Lie” spilled onto the patio and faded away. I’m not at all, in a position to refute Ronson’s wide spanning resume or influence on music, but what I will say is: I didn’t pay $30 to listen to wedding DJ music on vinyl.
